Family: Onagraceae

The plant is native to North America and was introduced into Europe in the seventeenth century. The oil is cold pressed from the seeds and is rich in linoleic acid (approximately 70 percent) which is in a polyunsaturated fatty acid and also contains GLA (gamma linoleic acid) which is also present in borage oil.

Heralded as ‘miracle of modern times’, it has become increasingly popular to take evening primrose oil internally in capsules for a whole host of conditions including:

prevention of heart disease

lowering of blood cholesterol and blood pressure

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menopause and other

menstrual irregularities

skin conditions such as
allergic conditions
asthma and hayfever

mental disorders such as hyperactivity in children and

schizophrenia

multiple sclerosis
diabetes

Raynaud’s disease.

Uses:

excellent for dry skin
ideal for sensitive and allergic-type skin
calms down redness and inflammation

counteracts premature ageing of the skin and wrinkles
favourable for skin conditions aggravated by hormonal imbalances e.g. acne and puberty, prior to menstruation and during the menopause

may improve varicose veins
beneficial for dry hair and dandruff.

Evening primrose oil is usually added to a blend in up to a 10 per cent dilution.
